Summer can be a tricky time for engagement. On one hand, there’s a natural lift in mood thanks to longer days and warmer weather. On the other hand, vacations, distractions, and that mid-season slowdown can make it tough to keep everyone focused and motivated.
But summer doesn’t have to be a lull. It’s actually a great opportunity to strengthen your culture, reconnect with your team, and reset your focus for the second half of the year.
Here are five ways to keep your team engaged and energized this summer.
Now is not the time to clamp down on schedules. Summer is the perfect time to offer flexibility—things like half-day Fridays, the option to work remotely, or a more relaxed start and end to the workday.
The key is to balance freedom with clarity. Let your team know what really matters right now, and give them the space to decide how and when to get it done. When people feel trusted, they tend to show up more motivated and accountable.
Think of this like a reset button. Carve out time to ask a few important questions: What’s working well? What’s draining energy? What’s one thing we want to shift for the rest of the year?
This can be done in a few different ways—short team sessions, a pulse survey, or informal one-on-ones. The goal is to listen, reflect, and set your team up for success in the months ahead.
Summer can feel a bit scattered. Some people are away, big deadlines are further out, and it’s easy to lose momentum. That’s why it’s so important to celebrate the small stuff.
Find simple ways to spotlight progress. Share a weekly team win. Start a recognition thread on Slack. Let your team nominate each other for kudos. These moments of visibility create a sense of progress, even when things are moving at a lighter pace.
Most people don’t want a full-blown training program in the summer, but that doesn’t mean they’re not interested in learning and growth. Try offering small, low-pressure ways to develop new skills or perspectives.
This could be a quick lunch and learn, a summer book club, or a short leadership series for emerging managers. Keep it casual and make it feel like a chance to grow, not another thing on the to-do list.
Summer is a great time to make your culture feel real and alive. Think team picnics, coffee catch-ups, outdoor meeting (whether you’re remote or not), or send your team an ice cream during the hottest week. Look for opportunities to spotlight your values, build connection, reinforce trust, and remind people why they enjoy being part of your team.
Summer doesn’t have to slow you down. Create some intention and use it as a powerful time to reconnect with your team, build momentum, and lay the foundation for a strong finish to the year.
