Can CBD Oil Help You Lower Your Stress?

The majority of us are constantly looking for effective ways to lower stress. We also totally understand the frustration that comes with trying a number of different health supplements that just do not seem to work. However, one supplement that can truly make a difference that you might not be familiar with is CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol and is just one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that are produced both internally in your body and externally like in plants. Those that are produced within the body are called endocannabinoids. Those that are produced in plants are called phytocannabinoids. There are also some cannabinoids that are synthetic and produced by other means that are in no way natural.

Hemp is a type of cannabis that is known to be very high in CBD content and low in THC. THC is yet another cannabinoid and is the psychoactive component in cannabis. This chemical compound will produce that high feeling. On the other hand, marijuana is another type of cannabis that is high in THC and low in CBD content.

CBD oil is a supplement that suspends the active component of CBD in a carrier oil. The thing is, you need to be mindful of the product that you are purchasing since some brands will contain THC. At ICARIA, we use a CBD isolate, meaning it is just the active component of cannabidiol itself that is suspended in a coconut MCT oil. This allows us to guarantee that every single product we offer comes with zero THC content in order to avoid any undesirable side effects. CBD isolate also comes from the hemp plant. In addition, CBD is non-addictive whereas THC can be.

We'd like to add that for some people or conditions for which CBD oil is used, having a little THC may be desirable, we just don't have it in any of our products.

How Does CBD Oil Work?

The human body contains an endocannabinoid system, just like the one found in animals. This system consists of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors which are located throughout the entire body including in the brain and the peripheral nervous system. These receptors are like locks that can only be opened with a specific key which would be the cannabinoid. Cannabinoids, like CBD, are chemical messengers in the body with the main goal of keeping the body in homeostasis, or balance. As a result, they also work to ensure that your organ systems are functioning at proper levels.

Can CBD Oil Help You Lower Your Stress

Since the cannabinoid receptors are located throughout the entire body, and not just in the central nervous system, cannabinoids can provide a very diverse effect on our system. CBD can help to regulate a wide range of processes within the body and also interacts with hormones and neurotransmitters. This includes an effect on pain, inflammation, mood, appetite, memory, immunity, digestion, and reproduction.

Imbalances in the endocannabinoid system can also be reflected anywhere else in your body. Cannabinoids like CBD are a natural solution that simply match your own internal cannabinoids. By doing so, they can help to bring your body back into balance. We recommend using natural cannabinoids that come directly from the cannabis plant over any synthetic options. This way your body knows exactly what to do with them.

What is CBD Oil Used For?

So how can you successfully apply CBD oil into your daily routine and lifestyle?

Like we mentioned before, CBD oil can affect pain, inflammation, mood, appetite, memory, immunity, digestion, and reproduction. Consequently, there are a wide range of uses for it depending on your own personal needs.

Stress, Anxiety and Sleep

Firstly, a lot of people use CBD oil for managing stress and anxiety. In our busy and hectic society, these are very common issues that people struggle with on a regular basis. CBD oil can be incredibly effective by helping to bring you into a calm mental state so that you can feel more at ease. It does this by lowering the production of the hormone cortisol which is responsible for the stress reaction. For this reason, CBD oil is very helpful for sleep too. Sleep issues are often linked to stress and anxiety in some way, so managing those throughout the day will also allow you to sleep better.

That being said, CBD oil will not make you feel different in any major way except that it will remove any of those uncomfortable symptoms. Think of drinking a cup of coffee, you can feel it working but it does not make you feel unlike yourself. When you take CBD oil you should feel totally normal just with a reduction in your stress and anxiety.

Focus and Productivity

CBD oil is also commonly used to improve focus and productivity at work. By activating specific regions of the brain that are responsible for learning, memory, and cognition, CBD oil can help you to boost concentration. By slowing down a racing mind, it can also help you to get into the zone so you can get more done in a shorter amount of time. You will experience fewer distractions and you will get a boost in effectiveness.

Pain and Inflammation

CBD oil is also great for those dealing with any sort of pain or inflammation. It has been proven to minimize acute pain whether it be related to muscle soreness, headaches, or cramps. However, it also works on any chronic health conditions like arthritis. It reduces inflammation and swelling, thereby promoting healing from within. We do know that chronic inflammation is the key reason for the development of the majority of diseases. This can also be extremely helpful for autoimmune conditions.

Hormonal Regulation

Finally, CBD oil also works to assist with hormonal balance. Like we mentioned earlier, CBD interacts with different organ systems within the body. This includes a prominent effect on hormones and neurotransmitters that are linked with the monthly cycle in females. As a result, CBD oil can be very useful for those experiencing uncomfortable symptoms linked to menstruation, like PMS, or menopause. In addition, it can be useful for minimizing food cravings as well since it can control appetite by working on hunger and satiety signals. By bringing your body back into balance, your hormones are better able to do the job that they need to do.

What Should You Look for in a CBD Oil?

When purchasing CBD oil, there are a few key things to keep in mind. The most important factor is going to be finding out if the brand does any third-party testing. This can ensure that you are getting what you pay for. It will also ensure that there is no THC in the product, if a product says there isn't any. The next thing you'll want to take into consideration is the concentration of the product. This will also greatly influence the price. Generally, a cheaper product will come with a much lower concentration of CBD. Of course, the dose that you will need is very different for everyone. The concentration is also taken into consideration, depending on what you're using it to help with. At ICARIA, our standard concentration is 1500mg. How to Use CBD Oil

We suggest starting slowly with CBD oil and tracking how you feel. Our general recommendation is to begin with 5-10 drops under the tongue. You'll want to hold it there for about one minute for optimal absorption. You should feel the desired effects within 20 minutes. From there you can choose whether or not you want to increase your dose. The good news is that there is no upper limit to how much CBD oil you can take, but it's a rather expensive supplement, so there is no point taking more than you need as there will be no additional benefit.

You can also take it as needed throughout the day for managing stress and anxiety. Or, if you are dealing with a chronic health condition, you will likely need to take it morning and night in order to keep things under control. You will definitely need to play with the dose to find out what works best for you over time. Often times, for certain health conditions like pain and inflammation, you will need a slightly higher dose to feel the relief that you are looking for.


One note of caution, you should not take CBD oil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you're using CBD oil to treat a health condition, or if you're taking any prescription medications, consult with your doctor before implementing it into your routine. CBD oil has been shown to interact with particular liver enzymes that can slow down the breakdown of certain medications, making them more potent in the system. This is an effect similar to that of grapefruit juice, so for any medication that states this warning you will want to avoid using CBD oil. People with liver disease should proceed with CBD oil with caution.
